The City of Port Moody has an exciting new opportunity for a regular, full-time Field Arborist to join our Urban Forestry team.

The Field Arborist will perform skilled arboriculture work on trees located in city parks and boulevards, liaise with other areas within Parks and other city departments to review arborist plans, permits and inspect tree related service requests while also ensuring the safety of staff and the public.

Responsibilities:

•Performs a variety of tasks such as tree planting, pruning, tree removal, disease treatment, tree inspections and the investigation of tree-related complaints.
•Assign, directs and participates in the work of one or more labourers engaged in pruning, planting, watering, fertilizing and removing trees; provides training to staff. 
•Plans and prioritizes work assignments such as tree planting projects, develops tree watering and fertilization schedules.
•Develops and issues work requests to contractors for specific arboricultural tasks; provides instructions and checks the work during progress and upon completion to ensure work meets city standards.
•Performs structural pruning of street and park trees involving work from the ground, on ladders, elevated platforms and climbing within the canopy.
•Inspects and identifies diseased trees or those posing an actual or potential hazard to public safety, determines required treatment, undertakes emergency control action as required.
•Provides technical reviews and approvals for tree permit applications and plan reviews.
•Prepares and maintains related arboricultural records and reports related to the work.
•Provides public education and answers a variety of questions from the public on arboricultural matters; investigates complaints, and takes or recommends appropriate remedial action.

Basic Qualifications:

•Completion of a diploma program in arboriculture or horticulture (supplemented by courses in arboriculture) or related Journeyman Ticket
•Completion of recognized training courses in tree climbing and structural tree pruning.
•One to two years of job-related experience in arboricultural and urban forestry work.
•Knowledge of methods, practices, materials, tools, equipment, and safety precaution in arboricultural work.
•Knowledge of tree species, diseases, and integrated pest management practices.
•Operation of truck and trailer to transport materials to and from work site.
•Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment.
•Ability to perform heavy manual labor at considerable heights above the ground.
•Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
•Valid BC driver’s license (Class 5 unrestricted)
